CORE Learning’s online Reading Fundamentals Leader Institute is now a Colorado Department of Education Approved Professional Development Program that fulfills K-12 School Administrators’ evidence-based training requirements for the Colorado READ Act.

Reading Fundamentals Leader Institute

CORE’s online Reading Fundamentals Leader Institute builds school and district administrators’ foundational knowledge of literacy so they can identify what to look for in classrooms and lead the work of evidence-based literacy instruction. This course is intended for all Colorado K-3 principals and administrators

School and district leaders will delve into the five essential components of reading instruction—phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—and:

  • Focus on instructional leadership and the challenges of implementation
  • Understand the qualities of effective instruction
  • Learn how to monitor implementation including using classroom observation protocols
  • Address issues around organizational change and sustainability of implementation efforts

Course Outcomes

  • Learn effective practices of an instructional leader
  • Understand the Science of Reading and the key features and practices of Structured Literacy 
  • Identify the principles and features of explicit and effective instruction 
  • Observe and practice instructional routines that support the five essential components of reading instruction
  • Identify key look-fors in instructional practice 
  • Use assessments to inform data-based decision-making within an MTSS framework
  • Use professional development and job-embedded coaching to support, monitor, and maintain sustained change

The course costs $700 per person including materials.

All necessary materials are provided within the course. Participants will be using a Participant Resource Guide (provided virtually), the CORE Teaching Reading Sourcebook, and CORE’s Assessing Reading: Multiple Measures.

The training is made up of fourteen 90-minute online modules for a total of 21 hours. All sessions take place online.

In order to complete the course and receive your certificate of completion you must attend 20 hours of training and complete a CORE end-of-course exam and score 90% or above. We provide opportunities to retake the exam.

This will be a virtual training via Zoom. You will be sent the Zoom Invite Link for your training a week before your training start date.
