Teaching Reading Sourcebook, 3rd Edition

The Teaching Reading Sourcebook, 3rd Edition is a comprehensive reference about reading instruction. Organized according to the elements of explicit instruction (what? why? when? and how?), the Sourcebook includes both a research-informed knowledge base and practical sample lesson models. It teaches the key elements of an effective reading program — phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary development, fluency, and comprehension — in a practical hands-on teacher’s guide. The new edition includes an entire chapter on reading instruction with Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).

The Teaching Reading Sourcebook has been rated by the National Council for Teacher Quality (NCTQ) as an Exemplary textbook.

Why You Need the Teaching Reading Sourcebook

The Sourcebook helps educators get a clear view of the current state of reading education and key literacy concepts. The teaching tips, intervention strategies, and suggestions for English learners make it a must-have for educators at every level.

"The Teaching Reading Sourcebook is one of my best resources when working on effective reading instruction with teachers.  I use it to give teachers the What, Why, and How of foundational reading research and instruction.  The Sourcebook gives clear descriptions of What is.... phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, etc... Then, it gives the WHY this skill is important to support all readers. And finally, it gives practical examples and lessons to help support the implementation of foundational reading practices.  I've been able to use it when coaching teachers from Kindergarten to High School.  The inclusion of research and examples, helps teachers gather further knowledge to support their learning.

I also use the Teaching Reading Sourcebook as my guide when teaching "Beginning Reading" and "Foundations of Reading" courses at our local Teacher's College.  This is the number one book, along with the Assessing Reading: Multiple Measures, I recommend all teachers buy to add to their toolbox of resources to help them have all the answers they need to teach reading systematically and effectively."

  • Full of Great Strategies - Tuesday, March 3, 2020
I plan to read the Teaching Reading Sourcebook again over my summer break because each time I reread a section of the book, I noticed something new. I particularly want to pay attention to the sections which address the needs of English Language Learners as our school has a high population. The sections about teaching vocabulary development, fluency and information text gave me many great strategies.
  • A Great Reference for Reading Teachers - Tuesday, March 3, 2020
The Teaching Reading Sourcebook provides both distilled theory and research, with lessons you can teach tomorrow morning. It is a textbook that pre-service and classroom teachers will want to keep and pull off of their professional bookshelf quite often.
  • Solidly Based on Research - Tuesday, March 3, 2020
I would like to commend you for such a well written and cross referenced product. I appreciate that is so solidly based on research. After 40+ years in education, I found it to be one of the very best referenced and cross referenced, making it really usable for teachers. It truly is a working reference manual. At first, when handed out the [Teaching Reading] Sourcebook, teachers just lifted it and moaned, and then they began to get into it and learn what a toolbox it is. Thanks for such a comprehensive manual for understanding and teaching teachers HOW to teach reading.
  • Excellent Resource - Tuesday, March 3, 2020
The CORE Teaching Reading Sourcebook is an excellent resource. There is great information as well as activities to support each section. It is well organized and lays out how reading should be taught step by step.
