Structured Multiliteracy in Texas: Building on Language Strengths

Moderator: Maya Valencia Goodall
Presenters:

  • Dr. Elsa Cárdenas-Hagan —  A nationally recognized expert in Structured Literacy and multiliteracy

Texas districts are investing in Structured Literacy and evidence-based reading instruction, but results depend on how clearly those approaches are understood, supported, and implemented across schools. In this session, Maya Goodall is joined by Dr. Elsa Cárdenas-Hagan, a nationally recognized expert in Structured Literacy and multiliteracy, to examine what it takes to align research, professional learning, and classroom practice in linguistically diverse systems. Drawing on Dr. Cárdenas-Hagan’s work with districts across Texas and beyond, the conversation explores how shared language, coherent professional learning, and job-embedded support help teachers translate research into instruction that builds on students’ language strengths. The session will also surface common leadership missteps that can unintentionally fragment literacy work, even when districts are committed to evidence-based approaches.

Participants will leave with:

  • A clearer sense of how leadership decisions drive consistency across schools
  • Practical insight into keeping literacy work grounded in shared research
  • A better understanding of how professional learning connects to classroom practice
  • Perspective on how coaching supports teachers over time in large systems
