Deepen Your Knowledge of Evidence-Based Instructional Practices for Teaching Fractions

Online Math AcademyFractions are often one of the toughest mathematical concepts for students to learn. However, proficiency with fractions has been shown to be vital for success with more complex mathematics, such as algebra. The CORE Online Math Academy courses provide the opportunity to build your understanding of teaching and learning fractions. During these highly interactive online courses, you will gain the understanding necessary to deliver evidence-based instruction that develops mathematical proficiency with fractions. This close examination of the Number-Operations-Fraction domain will increase your expertise and confidence in leading students to a deep understanding of fractions.

You may take either course whenever they are offered. They do not need to be taken sequentially, and you are not required to take both courses, though taking both will provide you with comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of teaching fractions.

Course Benefits

  • Complete highly engaging modules on your own time during the course dates.
  • Utilize a variety of learning modalities including visual models, video, problem-solving, hands-on manipulative activities, interactive resources, online discussions, and more!
  • Learn with a balance of acquiring new information and the application of new learning.
  • Explore conceptual, procedural declarative knowledge and problem-solving applications of fractions while modeling and discussing best practices.
  • Benefit from direct access to course facilitators.
  • Receive a Certificate of completion recognizing 16 hours of professional development per course.
  • Earn optional graduate continuing education credit.

When you take either course, you will:

  • Learn how fraction concepts and skills build and connect within and across conceptual topics and grade levels.
  • Understand the meaning and uses of fractions.
  • Explore and practice physical and visual models for operations with fractions.
  • Describe the connections between visual and numerical representations of fractions and operations with fractions.
  • Develop flexibility with operations and uses of fractions.
  • Learn strategies to address common misconceptions with fractions.
  • Connect learning to your curriculum.
