Online Math Academies + Coaching

Deepen content knowledge and instructional practices to activate students’ reasoning and thinking when engaging in math tasks.

Academy Overview

CORE’s Online Math Academies (OMA) includes five courses that support K-5 educators in developing a deeper understanding of the mathematical content and pedagogy that leads to student proficiency with early number sense and fractions. These courses enhance participants’ understanding of concept connections, link physical and visual models to operations, and provide strategies for addressing misconceptions.

These asynchronous and interactive courses include a variety of activities, such as videos of student learning, self-reflections, discussion boards to share ideas with colleagues, and more. To support participants’ learning, each OMA course includes virtual cohort coaching and progress monitoring.

Courses

Foundations for Numeracy for Grades K-2

Fractions for Grades 3-5

Counting and Number Relationships

Meaning, Equivalence, Addition, and Subtraction

Early Operations

Multiplication and Division with Fractions

Understanding Whole Number Place Value

“The strategies shared and reasonings behind the research/pedagogies were very insightful and exciting to learn about.”

Participant Outcomes

Recognize that how students learn and work with math has a strong impact on what they learn about math.

Connect mathematical representations (concrete, visual/representational/pictorial, and abstract) to develop understanding of concepts and procedures.

Learn strategies to address common misconceptions.

Connect course resources, ideas, and activities to your own classroom practice.

What’s Included?

Virtual Cohort Coaching

Four times during each course, participants will meet virtually with their OMA facilitator. These virtual, synchronous coaching sessions give teachers an opportunity to discuss and collaborate on key ideas from the course and how to apply them to their own teaching.

Teacher Progress Monitoring

Throughout each course, district contacts will receive progress monitoring reports and 1-1 communication with a CORE client manager so they can support their teachers in engaging in and completing the course.

97% of OMA participants indicated that the course exceeded or met their expectations.

FAQ

There are no required materials for the courses. All necessary materials are provided within the online courses.

These courses are for individuals or teams of elementary educators who want to learn effective instructional practices for the teaching and learning of math for all learners.

CORE’s Online Math Academy courses are designed for:

  • Teachers
  • Math specialists
  • Principals/assistant principals
  • Math instructional coaches
  • Special Education and intervention teachers
  • Pre-service teachers or classes

Participants should have regular access to computers with an Internet connection and proficiency with email and current internet browsers. The course works best on a computer, but may be accessed from a tablet or phone.

Each course is six to eight modules. The average time to complete a module is typically between 1-3 hours, and the average time to complete a course is between 15-20 hours.

Typically courses run over 4 weeks with 1-2 modules assigned per week. We can extend the time to fit a cohort’s schedule, adjusting the module and cohort coaching dates. Weekly schedules will be communicated to all participants by the CORE course facilitator.

Based on the average time to complete the course, the end of course Certificate of Completion will note 18 hours of work completed.

Participants may receive one (1) graduate-level semester extension unit for an additional cost of $109 per course. Units are typically used for salary advancement. There are no additional requirements beyond the successful completion of the course. Participants may register and pay for this unit once the course has started.

A full refund of registration fees is available for cancellations 30 days or more prior to the course start date. A 50% refund is available for cancellations less than 30 days but more than 14 days prior to the course start date.
