CORE is pleased to offer eligible Massachusetts educators and leaders a synchronous, interactive online course to build their knowledge of the science of reading and evidence-based practices for teaching reading that are aligned to MA literacy standards.

Summer Mass Literacy: OAPL Courses

Reading Fundamentals

July 26–29 or August 9–12
4, 4.5-Hour Sessions
8:30a.m.–2:00p.m. ET

CORE’s Reading Fundamentals is a synchronous, interactive online course that addresses the science of reading and foundational concepts aligned with the MA Literacy Standards. Through this course, participants will have opportunities to collaborate with peers and put their learning into practice. Participants will learn about:

  • Phonological awareness, phonics, and decoding
  • Multisyllabic word reading and fluency
  • Vocabulary and comprehension, with an emphasis on strategies that help students understand either narrative or informational text

Online Elementary Reading Academy

July 14–August 31
7 modules taken on your own time at your own pace over 7 weeks

The Online Elementary Reading Academy teaches educators the essential components of reading instruction, based in the science of reading, with clear and explicit models that are immediately applicable to the classroom. Modules cover:

  • An introduction to Dyslexia
  • Reading Assessment for Effective Instruction
  • The Structure of Language
  • Phonemic Awareness, Explicit Phonics Instruction and Irregular Word Reading
  • Multisyllabic Word Reading and Fluency
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension

Each module takes approximately 5–6 hours to complete.

Summer Mass Literacy: OAPL Course

CORE’s Reading Fundamentals is an approved course for Mass Literacy Open Access Professional Development (OAPL) and is available to Massachusetts educators at no cost. Eligible educators will receive a $400 stipend upon successfully completing the course by August 31, 2022.

Course Eligibility

  • Current MA PreK–3 public and charter school teachers and administrators whose work relates to literacy, including general education teachers, special education teachers, ESL or language support teachers, principals, paraprofessionals, literacy coaches, and other school or district administrators
  • MA higher-education faculty or administrators in accredited institutions whose work relates to early literacy, including faculty who teach literacy education courses and deans in educator preparation programs.

Course Stipend

  • Participants will receive the stipend of $400 once all course requirements have been met, Massachusetts DESE has confirmed your completion, and Massachusetts DESE has distributed stipend funds to CORE to be passed on to you.
  • Participants will need to complete a W-9 form and ACH Authorization form before starting the course. CORE will direct deposit your stipend within 30 days of receiving funds from Massachusetts DESE and will send a 1099 form to state and federal tax agencies. The 1099 form is a record indicating that you received the stipend payment.
  • No stipends will be paid for incomplete courses.

Completion Requirements

In order to receive a stipend, participants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Complete DESE’s Pre- and Post-Knowledge Assessment.
  • Score 78% or above on the CORE end-of-course exam.
  • Complete the full online course by August 31, 2022.

Cancellation policy

CORE accepts course cancellations three weeks or more prior to the course start date. Contact events@corelearn.com to cancel a registration.

Provided materials

CORE’s Teaching Reading Sourcebook; Assessing Reading: Multiple Measures; and Participant Resource Guide will be provided at no cost to eligible participants.
