CORE Support for KeyPhonics

Simplify the Assessment of Phonics Skills and Strengthen Reading Instruction Based on Actionable Data

Key PhonicesCORE has partnered with KeyPhonics assessment system, a technology-based screener and diagnostic test for grades 1 and up that measures the 12 most critical phonics patterns, including 102 foundational phonics skills, to provide teachers with insightful, actionable data to guide instruction and improve reading for all students. KeyPhonics can be used for remote or in-person screening.

CORE can help your team in administering the screening and diagnostic measures, reading and interpreting the reports, and making and implementing instructional decisions based on the data. Training and support services are provided remotely or in person through flexible, cost-effective packages customized to meet your needs and budget.

Initial Training (1 day on site)

  • Understanding the Context: While on site, the CORE Consultant will meet with the site leadership to identify
materials in use, visit selected classrooms, and uncover reading instructional issues.
  • KeyPhonics Initial Training: All staff receive training on how to use KeyPhonics and learn why KeyPhonics
provides one of the most reliable, accurate and efficient pictures of students’ phonics skills.
  • Understanding the Reports for Administrators: Administrators learn what questions the reports answer, how to

Data Study and Coaching

(recommend at least 6 days)

During in-person days, the CORE consultant may perform any or all of the following:

  • Meet with identified grades and teams at least three times to review the first set of KeyPhonics screening
data, then the second set of screening data, and again at the end of the year. At each data study session, the
CORE consultant will identify phonics skills on which to focus and develop an action plan with instructional
    adjustments and interventions needed.
  • Visit classrooms to observe the reading instruction accompanied by the principal and coach/ teacher leader.
  • Provide demonstration lessons focused on teaching critical phonics patterns identified through KeyPhonics
data, using the school’s own materials or using more robust materials if the school’s materials are not sufficient.
  • Practice program routines with teachers on reading foundational skills and provide templates to strengthen this
    instruction in current curriculum materials.
  • Start every in-person day by meeting with the building principal to determine the schedule and focus areas for
the visit and end by meeting with the principal to debrief what was observed.

System and Capacity-Building Support

(recommend 4-8 days)

content, and are culturally responsive. Based on the audit, the consultant will make recommendations for core
    and intervention materials.
  • Guide the principal on learning walks, identifying what to look for in strong instruction, focusing on specific
reading foundational skills, the curriculum used, and culturally and linguistically responsive reading instruction.
  • Mentor the designated coach on providing demonstration lessons focused on phonics instruction as identified
through KeyPhonics as well as how to be confident observing and providing feedback to teachers.
  • Support curriculum implementation by providing model lessons and additional program practice and lesson study
