Whole District Literacy
Training of Trainer or Certification Courses
CORE offers an intensive process to enable districts and states to build local expertise and capacity in a cost-effective, robust manner. Through our Training of Trainer or customized certification services, we are able to equip your staff with the knowledge and skills they need to redeliver CORE professional development events under a licensing agreement. This way, the district or state can widely disseminate essential knowledge and practices, plus provide professional development to new staff on an ongoing basis.
Training of Trainer
After completing the CORE event for which the in-district staff will become a trainer, participants complete 2–6 days of training depending on the service. This training focuses on a review of the content, presentation skills, learning the presenter scripts, and troubleshooting. Following the training, CORE requires a minimum of 2–4 days (depending on the service) of in-district consultation to ensure that the in-district staff is prepared, confident, and consistent with CORE’s materials. Below are the current Training of Trainer events available:
- CORE Reading Academy: 5-day Training of Trainer
- Selected one-day workshops: 2-day Training of Trainer
- Coach or Elementary Leader Institute (through special arrangement): 2–3-day Training of Trainer
Prerequisite: Prior completion of the event for which the Training of Trainer is provided. Note: To combine the event plus a training of trainers, CORE provides a total 10-day package for the Reading Academy and three days for individual events.
Licenses: Following successful completion of the training event and the on-site follow-up, districts/schools receive licenses to redeliver CORE events. When the initial license runs out a renewal process for additional licenses requires attendance at the annual Literacy Summit or participation in a DVD-based courselet.
Certified Associate Preparation
CORE offers a CORE Certified Associate Certification Program. A CORE Certification Course is similar to the preparation CORE provides for its own Educational Consultants. Certified Associates receive college credit, updates of research, access to designated CORE web services, and discounts on selected products. This process applies to each professional development event that is part of the client’s Certification Plan.
- The staff to be certified attends the CORE professional development event as a regular participant.
- The candidates attend a Certification Institute in which they are prepared to redeliver content of the event. Preparation is rigorous and includes background knowledge, practice with presentation scripts, and homework. Candidates and the agency receive high-quality materials, blackline masters, and CDs to use during local delivery.
- The candidates complete an intense on-site “practicum” process during which they plan with CORE consultants, co-train with CORE consultants, and receive observation and feedback during delivery. This usually takes place over several days and throughout the school year.
- At the end of this practicum, successful participants become CORE Certified Associate Instructors.
- Certification requires an annual Recertification process through completion of the CORE Literacy Trainer Review Course. This may include a Recertification Institute, an online or home study course, and attendance at the CORE annual Literacy Leadership Summit.
Training of Trainer or Certified Associate Kit
For each offering that is certified, the Certified Instructor receives the following:
- The Instructor Notebook, which contains agendas and presentation scripts
- Any background professional books and articles
- Complete set of participant materials
The agency (district or state) receives the following:
- Presentation slides in electronic form
- Blackline masters of special materials
- Materials for participants in locally delivered events
Licensing
A CORE Training of Trainer or Certification Course includes a licensing agreement in which a fee is paid to CORE per participant attending a redelivered CORE event. The fee scales in proportion to the number of days of the event being certified.
Participant Materials
CORE requires that a redelivered event use the participant materials prepared by CORE. This is to ensure the consistency and quality of the content provided. CORE sells materials to the client either per participant in print form or by electronic master for reproduction by the client.
Revisions and Updates
CORE will provide clients the opportunity to learn new versions of offerings as part of the CORE Trainer Review Course. A Bridge course for the new Reading Academy tied to the second edition of the Teaching Reading Sourcebook will be provided for Certified Trainers who have been licensed to deliver the Reading Academy based on the first edition of the Teaching Reading Sourcebook.
