Professional Development Options
Scholastic’s READ 180 Intensive Intervention
Levels: 4-12
Length: Varies, see below
Audience: All educators involved in teaching or implementing Scholastic’s READ 180 (CA 2008 Edition) or educators who may have recently upgraded to this edition
Prerequisite: Participating districts must provide the adopted materials at the time of the sessions. All participants must have the appropriate Teacher’s Editions (LBook, rBook, and System 44) for the grade levels they are preparing to teach.
READ 180 Intensive Intervention Implementation Workshop - 3 Days, (4 Days when combined with Leadership Workshop below)
Participants will learn, practice, refine, and plan:
- Techniques to maximize daily instruction and build academic vocabulary
- Instruction designed to meet lesson objectives
- Delivery of key routines and instructional strategies to effectively use System 44, LBook Teaching Guides, and the rBook Teacher’s Edition
- Methods for progress monitoring to increase targeted instruction using key SAM reports
- Differentiated instruction using READ 180
- Acceleration of intensive intervention goals
- Implementation of a careful instructional sequence and pace based on program design
Session 1 provides an overview and review of READ 180’s unique instructional model, with a focus on effective implementation and instruction using System 44. This session also focuses on in-depth study of essential pragmatics to partner students, how to establish efficient rotations, and how to pace the program as designed.
Sessions 2 and 3 focus on the skillful use of the LBook and rBook instructional components. These two sessions provide modeling and practice of structured interaction, key routines, and accountable responses using both the LBook and rBook to increase academic vocabulary and accelerate literacy instruction for students needing intensive intervention.
Leadership Workshop - 1 Day
Principals, coaches, and site leadership will learn the following:
- A comprehensive approach to implementing strategic intervention through identification, placement, monitoring, and goal achievement
- Walk-through “what to look for”s to monitor instruction
- Collaborative practices using assessments and data analysis
- Strategies to increase implementation and accelerate achievement
On-site Intensive Intervention Professional Development Options
Institutionalize Implementation (Site Based, 8-14 Days)
